Is Divorce Mediation Right for You?

Is Divorce Mediation Right for You?

You may have heard that there is an alternative to a traditional attorney-lead, court procedure divorce called divorce mediation. This process can be less expensive and much faster, but is it right for you?

What is Divorce Mediation?

You and your spouse will meet with a trained mediator to resolve the issues in your divorce. Once you have made your decisions, the mediator will draft your agreement and file it with the court on your behalf.

Should You Choose Divorce Mediation?

While mediators can facilitate the decisions you need to make in order to settle your divorce, they do not make decisions or offer legal advice. Instead, they focus on providing a neutral, informal setting for you and your spouse to settle your divorce yourselves.

If you and your spouse are in agreement on most of the items that need to be resolved, mediation can certainly save you time, stress and money. However, if you do not see eye to eye on issues like child support, child custody or division of property, a mediator is unlikely to help you. You may prefer to have the services of an attorney to negotiate on your behalf.
