Divorce Mediation Checklist

The divorce process can be overwhelming and emotional which can leave you less than organized.  Being disorganized during a divorce only serves to delay the process and make it take longer than necessary which compounds the emotional difficulty – something nobody wants. The better prepared you can be, the faster it will go and the more clear-headed you will be able to be which will likely provide you with a more desirable outcome.  Below, we have assembled a helpful checklist that can empower you to be prepared before, during, and after divorce mediation.  While no two divorces are the same, these general guidelines will equip you with important divorce mediation tools.

Divorce Mediation Checklist

Before Divorce Mediation

  • Gather and organize all financial information including income information/pay stubs, bank accounts, retirement accounts, savings, IRAs, stocks, investments, credit cards, etc.
  • Gather all vehicle information including make, model, year, date purchased, etc.
  • Make a list of all personal property including jewelry, art, furniture, collectibles/antiques, or other items.
  • Copies of all tax information from the past 3 years.
  • Shared property information including a recent home appraisal, purchase price and date, any upgrades made to the property, etc.

After Divorce Mediation

  • Change your last name (don’t forget to change everywhere including bank, DMV, CCs, post office, social security, insurance companies, passport, etc.).
  • Update or get new insurance coverage – health, home, dental, automobile, etc.
  • Hire a financial advisor to help you sort through and manage finances in at least the first year post-divorce.  While this is not mandatory by any means, it will make your life a lot easier in the adjustment.
  • Keep an eye on your credit score, with all the financial changes your credit score will likely take a small hit but keep an eye to make sure you don’t notice anything unusual.
