How You Can Manage Grief with Divorce Mediation

Divorce happens for a wide variety of reasons but, regardless of the reason, most people will experience grief during a divorce. Even if you cannot wait for your divorce to be finalized, you may feel conflicting feelings of grief that leave you emotionally drained and confused.  Many things can trigger grief including negotiating the division of assets or negotiating custody.  Whether or not you want a divorce now, the loss of a future you had envisioned is likely to cause some grief.  And, rather than ignore it, it is best to address the grief and work to manage it so that you can heal and have a clear mind during the divorce process.

Working with an experienced divorce mediator can help you navigate both the legal and emotional components of divorce. An amicable divorce will always is always easier to mediate but even in amicable divorces, each person may experience grief and at different times or due to different reasons.  Many people linger in the anger and depression stages of grief during a divorce and don’t realize that, in doing so, you are missing the piece that comes with acceptance. It is important to glean as much insight into yourself from divorce as possible so that you can pursue a better future. Ultimately, outside support is critical to managing your grief in divorce and that is where an impartial conflict manager comes in.

A divorce mediator will listen to both spouses carefully so that everyone has a fair and respectful chance to be heard.  By hearing both sides and assessing the situation, a divorce mediator can work with you to achieve a final divorce settlement that is mutually agreeable.  And, your divorce mediator may be able to help offer unique insight that will help you manage your grief during the divorce process as well as have a better future.
